When I See the Name

Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.
And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.
And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.   Exodus 12:5-8, 13

(The Passover) Blood on doorposts – type or figure

A. Blood of Animals: Atonement for Sin

The late Bishop G. T. Haywood penned a song that says “I see a crimson stream of blood that flows from Calvary. Its waves which reach the throne of God are sweeping over me.” But, I can see that crimson stream flowing before Calvary from the creation of man all the way to Jesus.

1. Types
Adam and Eve – animal skin covered their nakedness and shame, but it was the blood that covered their sin.

Abraham – in obedience to God offered Isaac on the altar, but a ram caught in the thicket would die on the altar instead. God provided himself a sacrifice.

The Passover – the blood was placed on the top and side doorposts – making the sign of a cross. Because of the blood they were rescued from the plague of death. They were delivered. They were saved.

Day of Atonement – the High Priest sprinkled the blood of the sacrifice on the mercy seat once a year to atone for his own sins and the sins of the people.
These were all types or figures of the true Lamb of God.

2. True
When John the Baptist saw Jesus coming he said – Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world. John spoke prophetically proclaiming Jesus to be the Lamb of God. Calling him the Lamb meant that he must be sacrificed on the altar of the cross…it meant that he must die….it meant that his blood would be offered for the sins of the world.

The night before his crucifixion Jesus gathered his apostles together to eat the Passover meal – He gave them instructions. He told them that as often as they do this, do it in remembrance of me. It would no longer be to remember how God delivered Israel from their bondage in Egypt. No longer remember the lamb that was slain and his blood on the doorposts. Remember what I did for you. Remember that I sacrificed my life….gave my blood so that you can live.

And Jesus said to his apostles:
For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. Matthew 26:28

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

Before the death of Christ, God accepted the blood of animals as atonement for sin. After his death, God accepted the blood of Jesus for the remission of sins.

B. Blood of Jesus: Remission of Sin

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; Romans 3:25

And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Hebrews 9:22, 14

C. The Name of Jesus: Remission of Sins

The blood of Jesus is applied to our souls by baptism in his name…through faith in his name. The blood is in the name. Without the name there is no blood – without the blood there is no remission of sins. When he sees the Name, he sees the Blood!
And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24:47

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.
Acts 10:43, 48

And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Acts 22:16

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12

When I see the name, I see all the types of the slain animal sacrifices of Adam, Abraham, Moses, the High Priest…
When I see the name, I see the suffering of Christ on the cross…
When I see the name, I see he was wounded for my transgressions…
When I see the name, I see he was bruised for my iniquities…
When I see the name, I see by his stripes I am healed…
When I see the name, I see my sins washed away…
When I see the name, I see your sins washed away…
When I see the name, I see the Blood!!

When I see the name, I see the Blood!!

The blood is in his Name!!
